  Why is there so much difference between the way we write and talk? Because when we talk, the other person can see our non-verbal language: smell our perfume (or bad breath!), see our frown or smile, hear the differences in intonation and inflection of our voice, feel the cold or warmth of the breeze, etc. We writers essentially have the task of translating the language of our other senses into one language our eyes can understand as it feeds the words to our brain.

  First of all, you have to start with a good photograph. You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear as the saying goes. Having a good photograph there are programs that let you adjust things like lighting, enhance the face, etc. You should get a working knowledge of Photoshop®, especially the unsharp mask in sharpen.  Light is always going to be key. The lower the aperture and ISO, with a high shitter speed are the general rule. Remember the rule of thirds and always set goals for yourself. Practice makes perfect and getting your picture as near perfect IN CAMERA is way better than post editing miracles. It’s easy to get too clinical with photo editing, such as neutralising every colour cast using the white balance controls. But some photos benefit from looking warm or cold compared to the ‘perfect’ white balance. Work to your own recipe rather than following textbook instructions.
